Ian Armer began his writing career in 1996 with his first published verse and corporate scriptwriting work. Ian also contributed to the popular film music magazine ‘Music from the Movies’ and ‘The Film & TV Yearbook’ before moving into writing and directing his own short films in 2002.
Between 2002 and 2008 Ian worked in a variety of roles on a series of well-received short films that screened at various film festivals across the UK. His roles included: director, writer, editor, actor and set designer. He was also guest programmer at the Kino International Film Festival in 2005 before working as a development producer on the pilot of a children’s television programme and director of a video promo for the burgeoning – and now immensely popular – AtmosFEAR! Scare Entertainment brand.
In 2005, having received funding from the UK Film Council, he directed the cult film 'The Clenched Tw*t of Notre Dame', which was nominated for the BBC Audience Award at the 2006 Manchester Commonwealth Film Festival. The short film, an imaginative hybrid of trash cinema and German expressionism, was picked up for a worldwide distribution deal and has since screened across the UK and Europe many times.
During this time, Ian also worked with the BBC, Shoreline Films and Pure Television on a number of productions, gaining valuable production experience as a runner/assistant before focusing solely on writing and developing his own projects. In 2006 he became a regular contributor to The Illustrated Ape magazine where his short stories and poetry have appeared alongside contributions from Maximo Park's Paul Smith and Radiohead's Stanley Donwood, to name but a few.
In 2010 Ian, working closely with his co-writer Amanda Webster, proceeded to write a number of feature length scripts that were optioned by various producers. The short screenplay ‘Cherry Lips & Liquorice Whips’ was to be directed by the famed British director Ken Russell (The Devils, Tommy) who showed a great interest in the work but sadly passed away before the project reached fruition.
Ian's first novella, the acclaimed 'Mad God's & Englishmen', was published by the Roundfire imprint of John Hunt Publishing in January 2013, leaping into the Amazon.com top 10 hot new releases in science fiction short stories in both paperback and e-book format.
In 2018, he co-wrote the screenplay for the award winning drama feature 'Introspectum Motel'.
2019 saw Ian return to writing and directing with the LGBTQ music film "Butterfly" for musical artist Possimiste. He also co-wrote the drama "Lead Belly" starring Jamie Lomas, produced by Rebecca-clare Evans and directed by Sean Glynn.
In 2021, Ian collaborated with best-selling author Matt Shaw on the screenplay of "Box".
